Josh Grigsby

Lead singer, Josh Grigsby grew up in King George, which is the gateway to the Northern Neck.  His bluegrass influences came at an early age, helping his father, who was a waterman by trade, on the water fishing, crabbing and oystering.  His father, James ‘Bubby’ Grigsby, would always have bluegrass greats on the stereo such as Flat and Scruggs, and Reno and Smiley and the County Gentlemen to name a few.  Bubby also loved the older country music by the likes of folks such as Jim Reeves.  Josh grew to love this music as well, even as a youngster, but also was influenced by country music greats such as Vince Gill, Don Williams, and the country music icons of the 80’s and 90’s.

Josh started singing by the time he was two to family and churches, and later at local establishments that offered live music and karaoke. He became a crowd favorite at Donk’s Theater in Mathews, Virginia singing country music at the venue with the house band Shades of Country.  Josh started going to bluegrass jams in the area and folks encouraged him to start a band, which is where Josh Grigsby and County Line began in 2013.  The band became very popular on the local music scene. One of the most memorable moments for Josh was opening a show for legendary Alan Mills and the Lost and Found when the band was less than a year old and winning the 2014 East Coast Bluegrass Competition in Gloucester, Va.

Josh is a self taught rhythm guitarist for the band as well, but his tenor voice is what draws folks to his shows. Josh’s recent bluegrass influences are IIIrd Tyme Out and the Seldom Scene,  Josh enjoys people, and is just and all around good ol’ country boy. So if you are ever at a show, make sure to shake and howdy with him.

BOB BURROWS

Bob is originally from Asheboro, North Carolina. He plays dobro and sings lead and harmony vocals with the band. Bob started playing trombone in the fifth grade and played first trombone with the Asheboro High School Stage, Marching, and Jazz bands. Bob’s Dad played guitar and introduced him to the Carter Family and other bluegrass records when he was growing up, which sparked his love for bluegrass music. In the summer of 1976, Bob found himself playing trombone with Nightflight, a seven-piece show band, in Myrtle Beach, SC in a club next door to the Bowery, where Alabama was playing. He toured with Nightflight throughout the southeast for several years before joining the Navy in 1982. Just prior to retiring from the Navy in 2002, Bob joined the Hard Knox bluegrass band on dobro and vocals and played with them for many years. Bob has also played bass with the Annie Johnson Band and the Heather Edwards Band, opening for many national country acts at local and regional concerts. Bob and his wife Brenda make their home in Newport News, VA and enjoy camping at bluegrass festivals throughout Virginia with their Shih Tzu, Lucy Pearl.

CRYSTAL GRIGSBY

Harmony vocalist, Crystal Grigsby, began singing with Josh at church.  They both had a great love for music and spent many hours singing and playing music together, as well as writing songs. She loves adding harmonies to his beautiful tenor voice and enjoys being by his side in this musical journey as a member of Josh Grigsby and County Line.

Crystal’s early influences came from her mom and aunts who sang in churches and on the radio when they were younger.  Crystal began singing in local church’s with her sister in law and niece in the 1990’sadding harmonies to the group 'The Preston’s'. She loves all types of music, but has a special place in her heart for bluegrass because of its honest, American roots, and having a family that is from SW Virginia, home of Appalachia style music, where many bluegrass greats were born such as Ralph Stanley and Bill Harrell.

Her first taste of bluegrass was Bill Harrell, who she claims as her first bluegrass ‘love’.  She was hooked on the music and now finds it hard to pinpoint a favorite, although she puts IIIrd Tyme Out and Marty Raybon and Full Circle right at the top of her list.  “There is so much talent and so many good songs, it really is hard to pick a favorite” she says.  “You will not find any better musicians and just plain out great folks than in the circle of ‘blue’.” Crystal attributes the success of the band to God and is thankful for the opportunities He has provided JGCL over the past couple of years.

Bryan Vance

Bryan plays upright bass and resides in Mardela Springs, Maryland, with his wife Cathy. He has six children and six grandchildren, with one more on the way.  Bryan has been playing bass for 45 years; however, he started out playing guitar at the age of 12. Bryan grew up in a musical family with a father and uncle who played bluegrass music, and two of his children play bluegrass as well. He was a founding member of the original Old and New" Grass band and has performed with several local bands.

Bryan is no stranger to our events and music, as he has been coming to our shows with his son Josh who is the mandolin player for JGCL and has filled in on bass when we needed him. Bryan says he is looking forward to continuing to play with Josh Grigsby and County Line and we are excited to have him in the band.

In his spare time, Btyan is an avid bass fisherman and shooter.

daniel madison

Daniel began his journey in music in 2009, but his love for the Banjo goes back even further. Being brought up around Bluegrass, Country, and Gospel music, he got a taste for the Banjo at a young age while he was at a local fall festival when he heard the bluegrass music of the Sargent Family Band. He decided then that he wanted to learn to play the Banjo and started listening to early recordings of Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs. He then began to develop a love for the music of greats like Doyle Lawson and J.D. Crowe. Some of his biggest influences on the Banjo are Earl Scruggs, Terry Baucom, and Jim Mills.

Daniel was born the youngest of five siblings in Richmond, Virginia and currently calls Mechanicsville, Virginia his home.

He has played Banjo over the years for bands such as Rocky Hill Bluegrass Band, Mark Templeton Band, and originally Josh Grigsby and County Line helping them record their first album, “Changes in the Tide.” He has also done lots of fill in work with Blue Ridge Thunder and Josh Grigsby and County Line.

He took a break from the band circuit for a while to focus on his education in his career path as an electrician, but is excited to be back with Josh and the band. He also loves to play music in the worship band at his church and enjoys serving families in his community as a ballroom dance instructor.

Daniel is excited to see where the road leads as he rejoins Josh Grigsby and County Line. “I am thankful for the many opportunities that the good Lord has provided me with throughout my life,” he says, “and I am excited to see old friends and make new ones at shows in the coming days.”
